List of Publications

I was a Ph. D. student of the Department of East Asian Languages & Literature of Columbia University, concentrating on a comparative study of some works of English, Chinese and Japanese literatures. I spent an academic year there from 1969 to 1970, and obtained sufficient credits for the Ph. D. program. Having retired from teaching English in Singapore, Fredericton, the capital of the Province of New Brunswick, Canada, Beijing, and Ottawa, I am now a freelance writer of feature articles in English and Chinese respectively for major dailies in about half a dozen countries or territories:

(1) CANADA

1. The Ottawa Citizen
A feature article on Dr. Norman Bethune, entitled “Bethune's Long March”, written in English, published on August 16, 1999.
A feature article on international politics, involving Japan and three Chinas, entitled “Will the Diaoyu Islands Cause a War?” written in English, published on June 30, 1997.

2. Sing Tao Daily, a Chinese daily published in Toronto
A discussion of Dr. Norman Bethune with his surviving junior colleague, Dr. Wendell MacLeod, written in Chinese.

3. Published on January 28, 1998, in The Montreal Gazette
A feature article written in English about a cultural aspect of the Chinese New Year, the Chinese zodiac of twelve animals and the Chinese New Year.

(2) NEW ZEALAND

“Enter The Dragon”, a study of the totemism of the Chinese dragon, published as a feature article on February 3, 2000, close to the Chinese New Year of the Dragon, page 16, in “The Dominion”, a major daily of Wellington, New Zealand.

(3) CHINA

“The Trudeau I Know”, a feature article about the late Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, published in January, 2001 in Chinese in China's newspaper for the intelligentsia, Guang Ming Daily, Beijing, and its website.

(4) HONG KONG

A feature article written in Chinese for Hong Kong's Ta Kung Pao (大公报), on November 30, 1997 about a Chinese-Canadian, Arthur Lee, who threw in a large sum of money to save Canada's national treasure, some military medals, some dating back to the First World War, from being auctioned off to foreign buyers, thus becoming a Canadian National hero, received with honour by the Prime Minister.

(5) TAIWAN

A feature article about the first Chinese Canadian female Member of Parliament, Sophia Leong, published on April 13, 1999, in Taipei's Chinese newspaper, Central Daily News.

(6) SINGAPORE

A translation from English into Chinese of an essay written by a Japanese professor, entitled “The Introduction of Chinese Culture” in Japan, published on May 13, 1962 in a Singapore Chinese daily, Nanyang Siang Pau.
A translation from Chinese into English of one of the best known Chinese poems on love for one's mother, entitled “A Wanderer's Song” written by a Tang Dynasty(618-907) poet, Meng Giao, published in Singapore's poetry magazine, Hai Xia Shikan, on December 15, 1995.

(7) MALAYSIA

translations of two Malaysian Chinese short stories from Chinese into English, published in a book entitled BUNGA EMAS-An Anthology of Contemporary Malaysian Literature (1930-1963) edited by T Wignesan, printed in Great Britain by the Garden City Press in 1964 for Rayirath (raybooks) Publications, Malaysia. “The Dusk”, author Wei Yun, pp. 164-176. “The Green Leaf”, author Sung Ya, pp. 177-183.

The preceding list of publications is not exhaustive. As a freelancer writing occasionally for newspapers, I write only when I have something pertinent to say, and I choose the readership I want to address.
